A Birthday Sonnet for You

In candlelight’s soft waltz, your visage I see,
A portrait of grace in this grand soirée’s gleam.
The world may spin on, but it pauses for me—
When caught in the spell of your starlit dream.

Your laugh, like jazz, flows through my wistful veins,
Each note a confession I dare not speak.
For though I wear charm and my smile feigns,
It’s your name my heart pens when nights grow bleak.

If love were a letter in old crimson ink,
I’d write you each line in a ballroom’s hush.
In whispers of velvet, I’d make you think—
This crush is no folly, nor passing blush.

So on your birthday, I raise a toast true:
To the muse of my soul

A love that Never Landed

A love that Never Landed

We fell like stars in a sky too fast,

A fire that burned, too bright to last.

One month was all it took to know,

That love can bloom, then let you go.

Through midnight calls and laughing days,

We built a world in fleeting haze.

Your voice became my quiet home,

Yet love can whisper, then be gone.

Four months in, we made our plans,

To touch, to hold, to intertwine hands.

But just before our worlds could meet,

You let go, left me incomplete.

Now I walk through echoes of you,

In empty calls and skies too blue.

Some loves fly, but never land,

Still, I reach for your ghosted hand.

Somewhere inside me

Somewhere inside Me

You can hide me away so I won’t wake,
Let me submerge in the still agony.
Deeper and deeper. I am losing it.
Drowned in the muffled sounds of words I can’t utter.

Nobody pays attention. Nobody is here,
Still, I picture you in the dreams that fade.
Your breath lingers, soft and strange,
A remenant of fire that I’ll always cherish.

Gradually you left, slipping through my fingers,
A silhouette drowning in crimson paint.
Like our own darkly smudged painting
Let me hear your heart, you can tell me anytime.

All of my eternity that I want to keep
something inside me
Starry night, into the light you leaned on
The moment I cleared away the darkness and reached you
Just held in my arms, you can hold your breath

Even if my heart races
Even if I look somewhere else, I think of you
Stay inside me, you can close your eyes
Even if you can’t see it
Even if you don’t feel it, you can lean on me.
Bearing away. You’re still here,
Somewhere in me awaiting, concealed in hurt.

Akanni Akinkanju

Akani, Son of Akinkanju

Charming Prince, Grandson of Jakuta

Fierce warrior that rages with thunder

The voice that freezes the heart of men

Lover of Ewatomi, The mirage dancer

Ewatomi, the beauty that steals hunters kill

The pride and Ego of Akani

The Artemis that controls each beat of his heart

Envy of every prince but soon grieve of Akani

Akani Akinkaju, Such a pity

So close was Ewatomi but far she walks

What a time to behold, a lesson to power

How did you lose this beauty?

Can it be the pride of being the prince?

Or the weight of the kingdom?

Akani seeks the past to be re-winded

To retrace the journey with a bag of warning

But what do we do about the pain in the heart

The injury Ewatomi carries so deep

Like the Yoruba line “Oju Epa Kole Jo Oju ara”

Akani Akinkanju, a conqueror of war

Filled with great and winning Mind

I wonder if in time Past

Akani could have done it different

So He was remembered as the Akinkanju that drowns in Pain

Ewatomi

Listen to the voice of the drum

The melody of the gong

The voice of the sparrows

Ewatomi, the sound it all whistle

Look at the damsel dance

The Artemis of our age

To the tune of the drum, it’s her raven beauty

Who will save the swaying men?

Ewatomi, her dances brood pleasure

Steps after step, men hearts are stolen away

Medicine to the vibrant man

A diet to the sick man

The beauty that steals the hunter kills

The dancer that put a smile on a sorrow man’s face

The tune that turns the drum into a God

What a sight to behold

Ewatomi the goddess of beauty

This is Nigeria

So I know a place where two rivers embrace
A place of treasures, lost and fortunes made
Where the sun smiles on your back
and the sand twinkle between your barefoot
Far north is the dry dusty plains
To the core east of wet muddy shore
Where the sound of the gulls on the breeze beats
and the rhymes of the waves crashes to tune

I talk about the home to the giants
Where reptiles still ruled the land, a totem to behold
A land where the spirit abode in the circle of stones
where gods resides in powerful cave
the ancestral home that speak to the shadows
This crucible of the stone-man, palace of thunder god
This is a tale of powerful black land
Where the secrets of wildness lies on their palm
This is Nigeria

A place where the mountains pay homage to the skies
and the valleys cloth himself with vines of green
Her father’s name is struggle, desert plains and thorn trees
Oh I speak of the pathways of hunters and frontiers
a cradle of the ape-man who walks erect on rocky ground
land of wildness, of living fossils and elephants
Where lions roar and springbok herds leap

A country filled with milk and honey
Where darkness loomed and light saw us through
kingdoms of living legends and mirages
Where the sound of drums signal the beauty of culture
Where the people live close to the soil
talk of the riches of the land, praises of your gilded king
this is Nigeria, my land and my home
Where I can breathe the scent of peace

The Mistletoe

I do not want to be the wild king
Whose presence melts the soul!
And keeps his mates on the run,
Who have no ally but all prey

I do not want to be the IROKO
Palling the forest with imperial droplets of the frost,
So magnificent and vehement
Yet a prey to the wood-cutter

I would oblige to be the mighty KHAN
Whose words is like a sword that pierces the soul
Who laughs and many trebles in fear
Whose voice makes his subordinates freezes

Let me be a mistletoe, the shining light,
The rising sun that breaks the dawn into day
That lighting the Hamattan for Christmas
That gives hope to many
I want to be an active light
Who reminds many of success,
And makes a crying man laugh

The Mistletoe

Behind the Scene Commentary

For This Poem, I recently just got my Second Job, though I was actively doing my previous job, too, this one was my first official job. Leave the boring story. The real gist was that I was thinking of what kind of man I would love to be remembered as, so I wrote this, and yeah, it has been my guide to looking at what I want to achieve in life.

So what kind of a person do you want to be remembered as?

SUMMER OF LOVE 💗✨

Our love was a flame, that burned bright and true,

A love that was pure, and strong, and forever new.

We’d gaze into each other’s eyes, and see a love so real,

A love that was the stuff, of dreams, and fantasies that we’d feel.

But like the summer, our love was fleeting and bright,

A moment in time, that shone with beauty and light.

We’d chase the sunsets, and dance in the rain,

Our love was a symphony, that played on, without a single strain.

Now, as I look back, on those days of love and peace,

I’m reminded of the power, of love’s release.

For in the summer of ’67, love was the answer, we’d find,

A love that was pure, and strong, and forever on our mind.

And though the years have passed, and our love has faded away,

The memories of that summer, will forever stay.

For in the summer of love, we found a love so true,

A love that will forever, be a part of me and you.
